Mesquite, NV – On May 25, Lance Darrell Newlin, 67, allegedly shot and killed his son to protect his wife Jennifer Newlin, 66, at their residence.
According to Mesquite Police Sergeant Wyatt Oliver the Coroner is responsible for releasing the name of the deceased.
According to Oliver in an MPD press release, officers arrived on the scene and found the victim lying on the floor unconscious and breathing. The Mesquite Fire Rescue paramedics attended to the victim and transported him to the Mesa View Regional Hospital, where he died.
The MPD press releases assert that Mesquite Detectives learned the victim had recently had a noticeable decline in his mental state, along with heavy alcohol and mind-altering drug use.
According to the Press release, the victim, wielding a knife, initiated an argument with his mother. When threatened with a 911 call, the victim allegedly attacked his mother. The father feared that his son would stab his mother, shot his son.
While the press release asserts that police believe the father’s actions were justified and had he survived, the son would face felony criminal charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
