K9 Sniffs Drugs, Two Arrested

Mesquite, NV – On Thursday, June 25, 2020 at approximately 1:15 p.m. a Mesquite Police Officer was investigating a report of a suspicious male at a casino that employees wanted to trespass from the property. The officer located a vehicle in the parking lot occupied by the suspicious male and another male driver. While speaking with the two men, the officer observed several items of drug paraphernalia throughout the vehicle and other evidence of illegal drug activity.

A drug sniffing K9 who is highly trained and certified to smell for the scent of illegal drugs alerted to the scent of illegal drugs inside the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle officers recovered approximately 11 grams of methamphetamine, over 60 prescription pills packaged for sale, small scales, and other drug paraphernalia.

As officers attempted to take the driver into custody he fled on foot towards Interstate 15. Officers pursued the suspect on foot across both northbound and southbound lanes of I-15 and into a residential area, where officers were able to safely take the felony fugitive into custody without injury. The other male was taken into custody without incident.

Lewis Russell

Lewis Russell, 34, of St. George, UT was the male who ran from officers. He was arrested for misdemeanor obstructing an officer, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, felony use of ID of another to avoid prosecution, felony possession of methamphetamine with the intent to sell, felony trafficking methamphetamine, felony possession schedule III-IV controlled substance with intent to sell, and a fugitive warrant out of Utah for felony parole violation.

Patrick Kelley

Patrick Kelly, 36, of Santa Clara, UT was arrested for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, felony possession of methamphetamine with the intent to sell, felony trafficking methamphetamine, and felony possession schedule III-IV controlled substance with intent to sell.

Due to the felony charges both males were transported to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
