Health Care 505: Don’t Be a (COVID-19) COVID-iot

Ever since we began covering the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been working our hardest to deliver true news and accurate information based on real science. Unfortunately, some “wellness experts”, celebrities, politicians, and other crispy characters don’t share our goal. As long as they continue to spread “fake news” about the novel coronavirus, we’ll have to continue debunking their lies.

No, that 5G cell tower is not giving you COVID-19!

We (as a society) love and obsess over our celebrities, and COVID-19 hasn’t really changed that. We freaked out when Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson tested positive for COVID-19, then let out huge sighs of relief when Wilson started rapping on Instagram and Hanks guest-hosted SNL. We couldn’t believe our ears when certain other stars attempted to go viral with their lyrical (in)abilities, then we sang our praises to Rihanna for stepping up to help domestic violence victims in need. We rolled our eyes over Tom Brady’s white privileged nonsense, then we cheered on Sean Doolittle for putting people over profits.

So now that stars like M.I.A., Woody Harrelson, Keri Hilson, and even a British TV journalist (??!!) are furthering the conspiracy theory about 5G (allegedly) causing COVID-19, I’m taking notice. Here’s what that’s about: The usual far-right suspects from the anti-vaccine movement (again), QAnon, and other dark corners of the “Web of Hate” have been lying about 5G-equipped cell towers carrying coronavirus-laced radio waves. And even though scientists have found zero evidence to corroborate it and have since unequivocally declared it “complete rubbish”, even more influential “fake news” peddlers like Alex Jones and the Russian government-run RT network have spread the 5G conspiracy theory so far and wide that the above mentioned celebrities are now entertaining it.

Here’s the truth: 5G transmits via radio waves, a non-harmful part of the electromagnetic spectrum. COVID-19 is a virus that can be traced back to animals, most likely all the way back to bats. There is no way in hell that “the globalists” directed a bat or some other animal to sneak some novel coronavirus into 5G-equipped cell towers to transmit to all of us!

Here’s some more truth: Arson and vandalism are crimes. (Check NRS 205 and NRS 206!) People who set cell towers on fire are committing crimes. And only are they criminals, but they’re criminals acting without any just or rational cause. How much of a bummer would it be to rush outside to “protect your family”, set a cell tower on fire, get arrested for arson and/or vandalism, then find out from your jail cell (where you may face greater risk of COVID-19 transmission) that your crime did absolutely nothing to “protect your family” from a virus that is not transmitted via cell towers?

No, those essential oils will not cure your COVID-19!

Just over a year ago, I shared the story of a former Nevada legislator who turned his “Real Water” empire into a real pyramid-shaped multi-level marketing (MLM) set-up. Now that we’re living in “The Era of ‘The Rona’”, MLM’s are making even wilder pitches to try to trick you into giving them money so they can give you “financial freedom” (read: wallet-destroying debt). And even worse, some of these MLM’s are even promising “wellness” and “coronavirus cures” if you simply “join our team!”

Fact check: Essential oils may smell good, but there is zero scientific evidence that any essential oils are any more effective at treating and/or curing COVID-19 as they are at treating and/or curing Ebola and/or any type of cancer. (Spoiler alert: They don’t.) But of course, real science isn’t stopping essential oil MLM’s Young Living and doTERRA from encouraging their recruiters to use COVID-19 as the ultimate “opportunity” to “expand your business!”

Of course, Young Living and doTERRA corporate spokespeople say they make no claims on their products’ “healing powers”. However they literally incentivize recruitment at all costs, and they only crack down on misinformation when their recruiters get caught spreading it. Not only will these essential oil schemes drain your bank accounts and lines of credit, but they still won’t cure you of COVID-19 or any other disease.

Yes, racism and other forms of bigotry are as disgusting as ever.

And finally, before I sign off, we need to talk about hate crimes. Throughout the country and around the world, we’re seeing a spike in coronavirus hate crimes. And because President Donald Trump continues to fan the flames  (even when he occasionally contradicts his own actions), Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) continue to bear the brunt of this brute force bigotry.

There is zero evidence to suggest that COVID-19 is any kind of “Chinese biological weapon”, and there is zero evidence to suggest that the AAPI community is full of “disease carriers” who are hell-bent on killing you. Attacking anyone who “looks Chinese” at the grocery store or at the park will not “protect your family”. Rather, committing a hate crime (Check NRS 193, NRS 200, and NRS 207!) makes you a violent bigot who’s only adding to the pain and suffering we’re all experiencing and making quarantine life even harder for AAPI families

If you’re in need of medical treatment, contact your primary health care provider first. If you fear you can’t afford treatment from a hospital or doctor’s office, check with the Southern Nevada Health DistrictWashoe County Health DistrictCarson City Health and Human Services, or the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services for resources in your area. For additional aid, check the Nevada Current’s and Battle Born Progress’ resource guides. If you can afford proper treatment and you are fortunate enough to help others in need, please donate to larger operations like Direct Relief and Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, and to local groups like Three Square.
